There are many ways in which we can test and
assess our clients but out of these postural assessment is easy to incorporate
into the treatment session.
A vital skill for a quality massage
therapist is the ability to perform an accurate postural assessment. The
majority of physical aches and pains stem from distorted posture arising from
dysfunctional body parts. This in turn forces the body to make ill-fated
adjustments. Postural assessment plays a vital role in effective massage
treatment allowing you, as a massage therapist, to identify the structural
deformities and identify the root cause of your clients’ problems.
In a sense, the muscles, ligaments and
tendons of the body act as ‘guy ropes’ or ‘strainers’ for the skeleton. When
they become overly contracted, they pull on the bone where they are attached,
causing a misalignment in that area. This can have a ‘domino effect’ throughout
the body, causing further distortions. The postural distortions may, in turn,
limit nerve supply to the various organs and systems of the body, causing
further ill-health. This is why postural assessment is such a vital step in your
clients’ recovery.
A good posture will maximise the function of
muscles and joints, aiding in the well-being and performance of an athlete. As
massage therapy practitioners, one of our goals is to develop and maintain the
optimal balance between muscles and their relationship with the skeletal
system.
More often than not, the circumstances in
which we first meet our clients will be related to an acute problem accompanied
by pain, needing our immediate attention. The tendency is to focus on the area
of pain so as to give some immediate symptomatic relief, which in itself is
reasonable. However, in order to make an accurate assessment and correct the
existing condition we need to understand the underlying influences that may have
contributed to this problem.
Just think.....There is not much point
applying massage to relieve the pain if it is going to return immediately
because of the postural imbalance!
Postural dysfunction can be a result of
faulty biomechanics, previous injury and psychosocial reasons. Whichever of
these it might be, or a combination, it will play an important role in
influencing your approach to treatment.
Postural assessment, as a tool, is
essential. You need to develop it, along with other palpation and assessment
skills, as it can help lead you to answers and give you valuable skills to
improve your success rate and skills as a massage therapist.
Become a more effective practitioner by
learning to identify postural deviations and to select appropriate exercises for
each typical posture. The training will lead you step-by-step, through a
carefully structured sequence of learning experiences which increase, expand and
change your skills in analyzing human posture. This is a prerequisite to
understanding and implementing an effective approach to intervention.
Through active participation in a series of
practical exercises you will be introduced to an analysis of body mechanics,
including alignment and dimension. Alignment is viewed from different planes and
takes into account how the body as a whole is positioned, how adjacent body
parts relate to each other, and how alignment of individual parts relates to the
whole. Awareness of discrepancies in the alignment of body segments in specific
planes is used to draw attention to the importance of interrelationships among
body parts.
