Unit 27 - International

Entry requirement - ITEC (or equivalent) Level 3 Anatomy, Physiology & Massage

Sports Massage is a form of therapy that involves the manipulations
of soft tissue to provide relief and benefit to clients engaged in physical activity. This soft tissue which includes skin, fascia, muscles, tendons and ligaments can suffer congestion, trauma and tension as a result of repetitive and strenuous physical activity and trauma.

The role of the Sports Massage Therapist is therefore to address these soft tissue problems and imbalances through application of techniques prior to and after exercise with a view to enhancing performance, aiding recovery and preventing injury and re – injury.

Sessions consist of theory and practical in-house training and assessment, with exercises, tutorials and group working. In addition, students will be required to carry out case study treatments (5 Clients, each being treated 3 times) outside of in-class hours. This course is predominantly practical and you will require a massage couch, cover and paper roll for home/field practice. Appropriate uniform (Polo shirt, Track suit bottoms and trainers). Student insurance is mandatory and available through Embody.

  • Muscle Cell Physiology
  • Changes that occur during exercise to the Muscular and Neurological Systems
  • Muscle names, origins and insertions
  • Joint structure details and supporting systems
  • Diseases and disorders and their effects on specific sports
  • Principles of training, Injury prevention and management
  • Overtraining Force and Motion Healing process
  • Preventative and Rehabilitative massage treatments
  • Stretching and stretching massage movements
  • Injuries and Scar tissue
  • Consultation
  • Contraindications
  • Client care, modesty and hygiene
  • Recap of Classical massage techniques
  • Sports massage techniques
  • Self application of Thermo and Cryotherapy

Following successful completion of a mock practical and theory you will be eligible to sit the ITEC Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage Examinations which comprise of a multiple choice theory paper and ITEC assessed practical treatment.
